Burning on Re-Entry? Our Acting Stratosphere Is Kinder Than We Think!

How many times have our careers been interrupted by life, or have we fallen off our game and then felt the angst build? I can go for days avoiding some suddenly-dreaded work with no complaints from my staff (!). Life happens, and we need a game plan for getting back to business.

I just needed a plan of Re-Entry.

I studied meditation with Emily Fletcher via Stay Sane and On Your Game this summer. I worked up from 4 minutes of meditation to 15. Then I went to a film festival and never returned to the practice. General malaise set in until I gave myself permission to start over and meditate for 4 minutes. The “hell yeah I can do anything for four minutes!” kicked in again, and I was back.

For me it was giving myself the permission to start over without feeling like I flunked or lost time. Producing? I re-enter in 30 minute increments. Workout DVD’s? I re-enter as beginner. Gym? Treadmill, 20 minutes, with an episode of Revenge on my iPod. I don’t need to psych myself up to remind myself why I have marketing minutes, work out, act, write, and self-produce. I just need to start over! Often.

Upon realizing that I dropped my practice of something I miss, I go on a forgiveness spree. Every day that I miss it, I acknowledge where I’m focused and forgive every conspiring event that stands between me and my business. This part can go on for days. Then the cloud evaporates and I start doing stuff. Inspired.

The more compassionate I am about being away from work, the easier my re-entry.

Tell me what takes your focus right now and how you get back to it!
